Some Linux distributions are not suitable for business users and others. Red Hat Enterprise Linux The (RHEL), and the Fedora Project Keep your Linux computer in the family.
In the past few weeks, both the enterprise and the community versions were upgraded. RHEL, a commercial distribution that is available via subscription and doesn’t rely on community support alone, is a commercial product. Fedora Linux on the other side is a distro that’s free and supported by the community. Red Hat, in this instance, is the Fedora Project’s main sponsor.
But independent developers within the Fedora project also contribute. Fedora Linux often serves as a testing ground for features that eventually become part of RHEL.
RHEL is geared towards enterprise solutions, while Fedora is aimed at developers and enthusiasts. What is the difference? Each edition is designed to cater to the specific needs of business and consumer users. Fedora’s free download is a huge benefit.
Red Hat released Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.0 on November 13th. It offers improved functionality for deploying applications, managing workloads more effectively across hybrid clouds and mitigating IT risk from the datacenter to public clouds. Matt Miller announced on October 29 that Fedora 41 was released.
Meet the Latest RHEL
Global market intelligence firm IDCOrganizations struggle to find a balance when it comes to maintaining Linux operating systems and workloads. This is due in part because of time and resource constraints. Cloud computing and new workloads like AI and ML, which are a part of next-generation workloads, can reduce their computing productivity.
RHEL standardization improved the agility of IT Infrastructure Administration Management Teams by consolidating OSes and automating highly-manual tasks, such as scaling and Provisioning, while decreasing deployment complexity. Red Hat stated that as a consequence, infrastructure teams spent more time on innovation and business.
RHEL 9.0 brings enhanced capabilities that bring greater consistency to the operating systems underpinning rapid IT innovation. This affects the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for edge computing, making these rapidly advancing advancements accessible to more organizations.
As new technologies such as AI are rapidly adopted, enterprise IT complexity is on the rise. Gunnar Hellekson is VP and GM of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. He says that this growth impacts both the applications Red Hat creates and the environments they operate in.
“While increasing complexity can increase the attack surface, Red Hat Enterprise Linux is committed to being the most secure platform with zero-trust on the market. This will allow businesses to tackle any challenge they face head-on, knowing that the system has a solid foundation. “This commitment enables businesses to embrace the next wave in technology innovation,” he said.
Stronger Security and Compliance Management
Red Hat Ansible Content subscriptions are included in the release to automate administrative tasks on a large scale. The latest release also includes several new system role, including a role for sudo – a command line utility in Linux – to automate sudo’s configuration at scale.
This capability allows users to execute commands that are typically reserved for administrators, while guardrails help ensure rules are effectively managed. Users with elevated privileges are able to automate sudo configurations in their environments securely and consistently.
Platform support for confidential computing is increasing, enabling data protection and reducing the attack surface of insider threats. Confidential computing prevents potential threats from viewing sensitive data or altering it. This allows enterprises to more easily use AI to review large volumes of data securely while maintaining data segmentation.
Image Builder is a feature that advances the “shift left” concept by integrating vulnerability fixes and security testing earlier in development cycles. This method delivers pre-hardened configurations for customers to enhance security and reduce setup time. These built-in features allow you to configure your system without needing to be a security expert.
Reduced automation complexity
Management tools simplify system management. Users can automate their manual tasks, standardize system deployment, and reduce the complexity of the system.
Web console’s new file management functionality allows routine file-management tasks to be performed without the need for the command line. These include browsing the filesystem, downloading and uploading files, changing the permissions of files, and creating directory.
A second benefit is cloud storage. Container-native innovation on the platform supports Podman 5.0, the latest open-source version of the container engine. It provides developers with a powerful tool to build, manage, and run containers in Linux environments.
Greg Macatee is the research manager at IDC for infrastructure software platforms. He says that companies who have used the RHEL platform validated the fact that it simplifies management and reduces overall system complexity.
They also pointed out that it reduced patching time dramatically, while centralizing policy control and simplifying kernel modifications. “They also emphasized the benefits of automation, improved scalability and access to Red Hat Enterprise Linux experts,” he said.
Enterprise Support: Added Key
Application streams offer the latest developer tools and languages as well as databases to help you create innovative applications. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.5 comes with PG Vector PostgreSQL and new versions of Node.js. It also includes GCC Toolset for Rust, LLVM Toolset and LLVM Toolset.
This new release will continue to support customers who are using Java Dev Kit 11 (JDK 11) even though it reached the end of its maintenance life in RHEL 9. The new JDK 17 default brings new features, tools and management for modern Java applications. It also maintains backward compatibility so that JDK upgrades are consistent for users and applications.
Fedora Community Release Highlighted
The Fedora Project refers to its community operating system as Fedora Fedora Workstation. It is a Linux operating system for laptops and desktop computers that includes a complete tool set for both developers and users of all levels.
Fedora Server is a flexible operating system for users who need the latest technologies in data centers. Fedora IoT, Fedora Cloud, and Fedora CoreOS, for container-focused operations, are all available from the community.
Miller announced in the online Fedora Magazine that Fedora 41 contains updates to thousands packages. These range from small patches to new features. The new version of the DNF command-line package manager, which is a modified version of YUM (Dandified), improves performance while resolving dependencies.
Workstation Edition offers a variety of desktop environments, also known as spins. These include Xfce LxQt and Cinnamon. The Workstation edition also offers a new line Atomic-flavored desktops that streamlines updates by bundling all updates into one image, which users can install. This eliminates the need for multiple package updates.
Fedora Workstation is based upon Gnome 47. Customization is one of the main features. The Appearance settings allow you to change the default blue accent color for Gnome’s interfaces. Choose from a wide range of vibrant colors. Small-screen support allows users to see icons that are optimized for smaller screens. They can interact with them more easily and have a better view. New-style dialogue windows also enhance the usability of many screen sizes.
