Apple Vision Pro is now shipping, and reviews are expressing a variety of opinions about this first-generation device. The Apple Vision Pro is a first-generation product that has a lot of technology, but a lack of applications. This will change over time as more developers build for it and the hardware evolves.
Apple currently has around 200,000 pre-orders, which is enough to get developers excited about the platform. Apple’s marketing is weaker than its competitors, but it is still better than the majority. Now, we will see if this is enough to generate demand for the device beyond Apple loyalists.
This device is not ready for most of you. The device is too expensive and has limited app support. Using the rule of 3, the current version will need two more iterations before it reaches the price and functionality most people find compelling.
This week we will be talking about Apple Vision Pro. We’ll then close out with the HP Envy Move. I’ve found this all-in one portable PC to be surprisingly compelling in the past few months.
Gen One Products
Generation One products come in two types: first-generation products for the vendor, but those which are part of an established ecosystem; and second-generation products that will launch the ecosystem they eventually use. The first product category is safer as you have immediate involvement and can learn from others who were first.
Apple Vision Pro is a later generation of Generation One. Vision Pro does not use any of the VR apps or VR services that are available on the market. Apple and its partners will be expected to create the Vision Pro’s ecosystem.
Generation One products are best sold to people who have experience with the product and are willing to wait or develop apps. They are usually technically savvy people who can overcome initial limitations. They also want to be involved in the process of creating the market that will surround the product. They are tolerant of breakage, and they can afford to pay $3,500 for this device.
I predict that a substantial percentage of the 200,000 people who purchased the headset initially are not the right people, and they will struggle to get the most out of it. But those who are used to the pain of a Generation One headset or ready to go through it will eventually find this product compelling and enjoyable.
Focus on functionality
A fundamental rule when buying a tech item is to not focus on the product but rather on its capabilities.
Microsoft Office is installed on PCs to run certain games, such as Halo for Xbox. You don’t usually buy hardware for the class unless you know what you will run on it.
Many buyers of the Vision Pro are not yet sure which apps they will use and don’t seek out specific apps for it. Many Vision Pro devices will therefore sit on the shelves unused until an app that is compelling becomes available.
Waiting for the third-generation device is preferable to the two previous generations, since users from those first two generations will already have felt the pains of the device’s infancy in terms of its usability and specific applications.
A Generation One product is unique because it has a particular status. The Vision Pro is a portable and expensive device, which makes it a possible theft target. Don’t put this in your car and have it visible through the window. It will grow legs, and then walk away from you.
The Good and the Bad
Apple Vision Pro stands out in the VR market with its 4K displays and lightweight design. It is limited in its VR capabilities and offers few apps that are worth downloading.
Apple is doing a good job of bringing out a device that costs $3,500 and does not compromise on quality. Then, they can work to lower the price and cost to appeal to broader audiences.
The initial reviews (and all Vision Pro reviews) are positive, and you create a base for when the device matures to become mainstream. Rokid has been my choice for traveling on planes. At around $500, it is a better value than the much more expensive Vision Pro.
Apple Marketing: A Test
Apple’s marketing strategies will determine the success or failure of Vision Pro. These efforts must not only attract new customers to Vision Pro but also engage current buyers in order to highlight positive outcomes. Failure to do so could lead to negative feedback on social media, which would kill demand.
Apple’s marketing team will be tested to see if it can still create a campaign that generates demand for the product. Apple is known to fund marketing better than other companies, so if they adequately fund the Vision Pro’s marketing, the product could surpass even the iPhone, as it continues to evolve.
Wrapping Up: The Case For Patience When Using New Tech
I buy version one products as I am willing to endure the pain to have something unique. I am often asked to comment about products such as these, so they are part of my job description.
Waiting until version 3 is a good idea if you don’t like version 1 offerings. The bugs will have been largely fixed by then, app support should be much better, and you’ll be able to get help on social media from a large number of people if there are any problems.
Apple has created an incredible product. Waiting until it’s more refined and better supported is the best way forward for many of you.
HP Envy All-in One PC
Apple Vision Pro is priced at $3,500. HP Envy Move All-in-One PC At under $800, it looks like you’re getting a great deal.
I have been using the HP Envy Move around the home for a couple of weeks now and it’s an excellent way to do work. The Move’s 24-inch screen makes it more convenient to use than my 18-inch Alienware Laptop for this purpose, although the Move is still as portable as a notebook.
HP Envy Move has only a 300-nit screen, so it won’t perform well in direct sunlight. If you have to work while your children are playing or pets are indoors, then this PC is for you.

This Intel-based all in one’s unique feature is that its base will automatically deploy when it is placed on a desk. It also has a pouch that allows you to hold the keyboard and trackpad together with just one hand.
It is not a gaming device or performance device. You can watch movies or play casual games on it. The base configuration comes with an Intel i3, but I would recommend spending an extra $150 to upgrade to an i5 or 16 GB of RAM for better performance.
The Envy Move has a battery life of around four hours. This is two hours more than the Vision Pro. It’s therefore more suitable for watching movies, both in terms power and interruptions.
HP Envy Move All-in-One provides an alternative to Apple Vision Pro because it is a product of the first generation that will enter an existing ecosystem. It is also initially very useful.
